Crafting Success: How One MNTC Graduate Transformed a Family Carpentry Business into a Thriving Industry Leader

Anthony Petrilla’s journey in carpentry began long before he stepped into Moore Norman Technology Center’s carpentry program. “My dad's been in the industry my entire life,” he says. By the time he reached high school, the decision to enroll in the program was a no-brainer.

But it wasn’t just about following in his father’s footsteps—it was about pursuing what felt natural to him.

“I have ADHD and ADD, and it gave me the ability to focus on something I enjoyed as a child,” Anthony said. “I always liked to build. I was very active, and it just came naturally to me.”

During his time at Moore Norman, Anthony thrived under the guidance of his instructor, who recognized his leadership potential early on. With his adept knowledge of the trade, he was placed in charge of managing class projects and guiding fellow students. He says this experience sharpened his management skills, giving him a foundation that would later prove invaluable.

After graduating in 2009, Anthony seamlessly transitioned into the family business, Petrilla Enterprises. When his father retired seven years ago, Anthony took the reins, transforming what was once a small operation into a thriving commercial enterprise.

Under his leadership, the company has grown from a modest three-man crew into a 14-employee powerhouse, doubling its revenue every year. What was once a business focused on residential trimming has now evolved into a large-scale commercial millwork operation specializing in cabinets, countertops and trim for restaurants, banks, law offices and medical centers throughout the county.

“Most of our work is local, in the metro area and statewide, but we do get into Texas a lot and have jobs all over the U.S.,” Anthony said.

Anthony attributes his success to determination and an unwillingness to accept limitations. “I’m not going to let somebody say I can’t do something. I’ll prove them wrong,” he said.

That mindset has driven him to create a business that provides opportunities for other skilled workers, including four MNTC graduates—one of whom is his younger brother, D.J.

Despite his company’s growth, Anthony faces a common industry challenge: finding skilled workers. “I pay above average for what I do, and I still have a hard time getting people hired,” Anthony said.

To help address this challenge, he serves on Moore Norman’s carpentry program advisory board, mentoring students, donating materials and offering insights into industry trends. He hopes to inspire the next generation of carpenters by emphasizing the stability and opportunities in the trade. “This industry is one of the few that will never go away,” he tells students.

Anthony’s journey from student to business owner, mentor and industry leader exemplifies the lasting impact of career and technical education. His dedication to craftsmanship and his commitment to fostering new talent ensure that the legacy of skilled carpentry continues for generations to come.
