From High School to LPN: Moore Norman Technology Center Celebrates New Generation of Nurses
Oklahoma is facing a critical nursing shortage, and Moore Norman Technology Center is leading the way in addressing this issue with an innovative approach to health care education. The PN Select program is an accelerated pathway for high school students to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in as little as six months following high school graduation.
Recently, Moore Norman Technology Center celebrated the accomplishments of its latest PN Select graduates at a pinning ceremony for students who will soon take their licensure exams to become licensed practical nurses (LPNs).
The PN Select program, an innovative career pathway offered by Moore Norman Technology Center, provides high school students with an accelerated route to becoming LPNs. In just six months after high school graduation, students are equipped with the skills and experience to pass their LPN licensure and begin their nursing careers.
“This program has been a life-changing opportunity for these students,” said Brian Ruttman, Moore Norman Technology Center superintendent. “In as little as six months following high school graduation, many of them will be earning around $40,000 a year at the age of 18. They graduate prepared to make an immediate impact and ready to meet critical workforce needs in Oklahoma’s health care industry.”
Students can begin the program as juniors through the health careers certification program, leading to certified nursing assistant (CNA) certification. During their senior year, they begin the PN Select program on a part-time basis, moving to full time after high school graduation and completing the program in December.
For many students, this program offers a crucial pathway to a well-paying career and financial independence.
"Knowing that I didn't have a clear way to pay for college, the PN Select program was a game-changer," said Hope Morales, PN Select graduate. "Just six months out of high school, I could start earning more than most of my peers, working as a nurse. It gave me the opportunity to not only build a career but also continue my education toward a bachelor's degree in nursing and pay for it myself."
Beyond providing students with valuable career opportunities, the program directly addresses the critical workforce shortage in the health care industry. Brittni McGill, MSN, RN, CCRN, Chief Nursing Officer at Norman Regional Health System, emphasizes the program's significance.
“Norman Regional Health System is committed to growing and training the nursing workforce of the future,” McGill said. “Programs like PN Select through the Moore Norman Technology Center are essential to helping meet the growing demand for patient care. This partnership is a win-win solution providing hands-on learning experiences for students.”
Since its launch in 2022, 18 students have successfully completed the program, with 14 more on track to graduate in December 2025.
The PN Select program is just one example of how Moore Norman Technology Center is committed to providing innovative career training to prepare students for in-demand jobs. For students interested in a health career program at Moore Norman Technology Center, applications open Jan. 6.
