Diagnostic Medical Sonography Instructor Shawna Herell was recognized by the South Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce as the Technology Schools Teacher of the Year from Moore Norman Technology Center.
Herell and many others who work in public and technical education took honors in multiple categories and received their awards during the annual SOKC Chamber’s annual Excellence in Education awards banquet held at MNTC’s South Penn Campus last week.
During her eight years at Moore Norman Technology Center, Shawna has overseen various clinical sites and students within the program. Before this role, Shawna was a full-time sonographer and clinical preceptor at Duncan Regional Hospital. Shawna holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Central Oklahoma, multiple national certifications specific to sonography and an Oklahoma Standard Teaching Certificate in Health Occupations.
Being a teacher is a profoundly challenging and rewarding job. I wake up every day smiling, knowing I can grow, influence a life, prepare students for a rewarding career, and love what I do. There is nothing better than watching an 'ah-ha moment,' participating in a student discovering their own gifts, empowering students to take control of their own learning and witnessing the evolution of their behavior, attitudes and thinking from a student to a sonographer.
