Jamie M. Rogers Memorial Scholarship Awarded to Surgical Technology Students.
Norman, OK
Two Moore Norman Technology Center Surgical Technology students were recently honored with the Jamie M. Rogers Memorial Scholarship. Brenda Hernandez Villavicencio and Alyssa Hill each received $500 which may be used at their discretion. Parents of the late Jamie M. Rogers, Mike and Nancy Rogers, along with Surgical Technology Instructors Julie Pennington and Fallon Hammond, made the scholarship announcement during their class.
After graduating, Brenda Hernandez Villavicencio intends to work as a Certified Surgical Technologist while she further pursues her education to becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Her career as a surgical technologist will give her vast knowledge in the OR and help her further her career.
Alyssa Hill has accepted a position at OU Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City, where she will work in the operating room as a Certified Surgical Technologist. She is excited about working with pediatric patients and making a difference in their lives.
Mike and Nancy Rogers shared that Jamie took great pride in her achievement of becoming a surgical technologist and her willingness to help others and be a great preceptor to students in the surgical technology programs. This scholarship ensures that Jamie’s spirit continues to positively impact our community and our students with this scholarship.
Jamie was a 1997 graduate of Norman High School and attended MNTC’s second Surgical Technology program, graduating in 2000. After receiving her diploma in surgical technology she began working in the surgery department at Integris Southwest Medical Center where she remained until taking a position in surgery at the Dean McGee Eye Institute. Jamie lost her battle with cancer in September of 2012. The scholarships in her honor are made possible through the efforts of her family and friends.
Criteria for earning the scholarship are maintaining a high grade point average, having good attendance in the program, and writing an essay about future goals in health care. Candidates were to also demonstrate good work ethics and practical skills by presenting surgical case logs outlining the number of cases and the skills used during those cases. A scholarship panel reviews applications and the scholarships are presented on-or-close-to April 7, which is Jamie's birthday.
