Surgical Technology Students Awarded Jamie M. Rogers Memorial Scholarships 2021

Two Moore Norman Technology Center Surgical Technology students were recently honored with the Jamie M. Rogers Memorial Scholarship. Dakota Chausse and Adriana Lopez each received $500 which may be used at their discretion. Parents of the late Jamie M. Rogers, Mike and Nancy Rogers, asked Surgical Technology Instructor Dana Miles to notify the winners.

Jamie was a 1997 graduate of Norman High School and attended MNTC’s second Surgical Technology program, graduating in 2000. After receiving her diploma in surgical technology she began working in the surgery department at Integris Southwest Medical Center where she remained until taking a position in surgery at the Dean McGee Eye Institute. Jamie lost her battle with cancer in September of 2012. The scholarships in her honor are made possible through the efforts of her family and friends.

Criteria for earning the scholarship are maintaining a high grade point average, having good attendance in the program, and writing an essay about future goals in health care. Candidates were to also demonstrate good work ethics and practical skills by presenting surgical case logs outlining the number of cases and the skills used during those cases. A scholarship panel reviews applications and the scholarships are presented on-or-close-to April 7, which is Jamie's birthday.

After graduation, Chausse plans on furthering his career at McBride Orthopedic. Lopez plans to pursue a career after she moves to Houston.

Jamie’s parents said she loved the medical profession and working as a surgical technologist. She served as a Surgical Technologist in 8,613 medical procedures and was a highly-valued employee of Dean McGee for the last eight years of her life. Her parents said there are three fundamental things that people want out of life: to love, to be loved, and to make a difference. They believe Jamie achieved all of these things during her life. Her parents said Jamie is missed by all of her family and co-workers and that they hope this scholarship can inspire others while sharing Jamie’s enthusiasm for the profession she loved.
