Advisory Committee

What does it mean to be an advisory member?

Purpose

The advisory committee links the technology center and industry and can advise on the many facets of a technology career. An advisory committee has no administrative duties and is not created to assume the authority of boards of education and administrative staff. Whether such groups are called commissions, councils, boards, or committees, it is important to remember that they serve in an advisory capacity.

A committee assists in establishing a two-way system of communication; informing the technology center of industry needs, new technologies, and current trends. MNTC educates the industry on the services the technology center can provide.

A committee is organized to collaborate for the best training so that industry and students are served to the greatest advantage.

Functions

Advise on training needs, course content, and length.
Make recommendations on equipment, instructional materials, improvements, and establishing specifications for training areas.
Make suggestions on “live-work” and hands-on projects to be used to enhance instructional objectives if applicable.
Participate in student industry interaction.
Assist in job placement of students.
Promote public relations and publicity relative to the career field.

Responsibilities

All advisory committees will meet in formal, minute-recorded sessions at least twice a year: once during the fall semester and once during the spring semester. Additional meetings may be scheduled at the discretion of the instructor(s) or committee chairman.

Attend fall and spring meetings as able, participate in committee discussions, and serve on subcommittees as applicable.
Carefully consider any concerns that come before the advisory committee.
Keep the instructor(s) informed of the latest industry trends and standards in their career field.
Advise on developing, operating, and evaluating the career field so students may benefit from quality education.

Each fall and spring semester, Career and College Connection hosts Employer Panels inviting employers to share insight on employer expectations, the company and career opportunities. It is a great opportunity to build your brand on campus.

Schedule a Program Area or Campus Tour

Enjoy a private guided tour of a program area of interest or the entire campus. Tours will give you an opportunity to see the classroom, visit with the instructor, ask questions, and see the students at work.
