Sept. 4, 2018 -- Moore Norman Technology Center, 13301 S. Penn Avenue in South Oklahoma City, welcomes the community to an open house on Thursday, Sept. 20 from 4 – 7 p.m. The event will celebrate the completion of a new all-in-one classroom space and safe room made possible through the bond approved by voters in 2016. The event is free and open to the public.
The South Penn Campus construction project is comprised of 5,965 square feet of classroom/safe room space. Two multi-purpose classrooms can be configured to serve a variety of learning environments. The third is specifically designed for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program.
Inside the EMT classroom, visitors will have an opportunity to see first-hand the new Simulator Solutions Platinum Real Motion Ambulance Simulator. The simulator operates on pneumatic movement and gives EMT students an opportunity to learn skills and techniques as if they were in the field.
“The simulator recreates a vehicle in motion and allows students to practice their skills on a manikin while experiencing movement as if they were riding in an ambulance,” said Katie Reynolds, MNTC adult development coordinator who oversees the EMT program. “It’s one thing to learn in a controlled classroom setting, but the simulator gives our students the opportunity to practice their skills on bumpy roads, through abrupt stops and starts, and other unpredictable road conditions that could impact patient care en route to the hospital.”
Child safety technicians from the Oklahoma Department of Human Services will conduct child safety seat checks and vehicles from the Oklahoma City Fire Department, Oklahoma City Police Department, EMSA, and the Cleveland County Sheriff’s office will be on site. Open house visitors can see the first responder vehicles up close and speak with representatives from the organizations as well Moore Norman Technology Center.
Although the bond projects at the South Penn Campus are complete, construction related to the 2016 bond is still underway at the Franklin Road Campus in Norman.
